The Melbourne Cup (2.11.2010)

The Melbourne Cup is a major Australian horse race. Known as “The race that stops a nation”. It is a race for horses over the age of three and a half, and covers a distance of 3.200 meters. It is the richest and most prestigious “two-mile” race in the world, and one of the richest turf races in the world. The event is held at around 3 pm on the first Tuesday in November by the Victoria Racing Club, on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne.

Melbourne Cup day is a public holiday for all working in Melbourne and some parts of regional Victoria. For Federal Public Servants it is also observed as a holiday in the entire state of Victoria, and since 2007 also in the Australian Capital Territory known as Family and Community day replacing Picnic Day. “Fashions on the field” is a major focus of the day, with substantial prizes awarded for the best-dressed man and woman.

Und wer war dabei? Die Desi. Naja, nicht in Melbourne, aber in Sydney. Denn auch hier machen die meisten Leute während des Rennens eine Arbeitsunterbrechung. Einige Einzelhändler schließen ihre Läden sogar komplett während und nach dem Rennen. Ich war mit einigen Leuten in einem Pub. Es war die Hölle los. Und die meisten sind auch hier super gekleidet. Im Kleidchen und Haarschmuck darf natürlich auch nicht fehlen. Es wird getrunken, gewettet, angefeuert und natürlich gefeiert. Wir sollten so etwas in Deutschland auch einführen. Das Rennen dauerte etwa 3 Minuten und dafür gibt es einen Tag frei (zwar nur in Melbourne). Nicht schlecht, Herr Specht…
